In 1871, Euphémie Schiever founded a wine and spirits company in Avallon (Yonne). The Business developed
during the twentieth century and very soon became a grocery wholesaler.
Their first supermarket was opened in Semur-en-Auxois (Côte d'or) in 1969 and from this base Pierre Courgeon
developed the Maximarché network.
The Schiever Group partnership with the central purchasing organisation Paridoc dates back to 1993. It led to the
opening of the group's first megastore in 1994 Mammouth Avallon (Yonne). Over the next few years, the supermarkets
were re-organized, the larger ones as Atac and the smaller ones as Maximarché more specifically focused on
rural areas.
1996 : After the Auchan group took over Docks de France, Paridoc became Eurauchan and Schiever remained a partner.
Since 1997, the group hypermarkets have opened under the Auchan trade name and the restaurants have been renamed Flunch.
Maxibrico supermarkets specialize in DIY and domestic appliances. They were developed initially alongside the food
stores before spreading throughout Alsace in 1999. in 2004, a warehouse was set aside to store them in Sanvignes
(Saône et Loire).
The internationalisation of the Schiever Group became concrete reality in March 2001 with the opening of the first
Auchan hypermarket in Zielona Gora under the aegis of the subsidiary company Schiever Polska, the second shop in
Legnica in November 2002 and the third shop in Walbrzych in July 2004. Today a fourth shop is going to be built.
Schiever is a family business established in 1871 by Euphémie Schiever; it was run by Georges and then by
Jacques Schiever and is currently run by Vincent Picq, Chairman and Managing Director, and Pierre Courgeon, Chairman
of the Supervisory board.
It was in the pursuit of quality that, in 1997, Schiever signed a Charter of Agreement unique in France, with more
than 2300 cattle farmers and groups in Burgundy and Franche-Comté and their regional suppliers.
This charter is based on the FB (French beef) interbev n° 1998-02 specifications outlining the role of each
and highlighting transparency.
Through this initiative, the group Schiever once again shows its commitment and attachment to regional economy.
The codes of large retailers? Schiever upset them! A human scale independent group, a true business policy, a family spirit...
